The Michigan State women’s basketball team will square off against Western Michigan University at Van Andel Arena Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. 

Both teams are very excited about the match up. The two teams have not met since the 1995-1996 season. “We are looking forward to rekindling the rivalry with Michigan State the next couple of years, a match up all will enjoy statewide,” said Tasha McDowell, WMU head coach. Michigan state is scheduled to appear in Kalamazoo during the 2010-2011 season.

“The 2009-10 season should be an exciting year for Michigan State women’s basketball,” said Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant.  “Our non-conference schedule will provide many difficult challenges as we prepare for the Big Ten Conference season.”

The Spartans home regular season opener is set for Thursday, Nov. 19 against Notre Dame.  The Broncos home opener will be against Loyola-Chicago Nov. 19th at University Arena.

The game at Van Andel Arena is considered to be a homecoming game for Grandville senior Allyssa DeHaan. The Spartans will play in Grand Rapids for the first time since facing Marquette on Dec. 2, 2001. 

“I can’t think of a better way to spend my hometown day than playing in my hometown; what an honor,” said DeHaan.  “For the past three years fans from Grand Rapids have made the trek to East Lansing to watch us play, now I’m coming home to them.”
