Since opening its doors on October 8, 1996, Van Andel Arena has been a premier destination for world-class entertainment in West Michigan. As the arena celebrates 30 years of hosting live events in Grand Rapids, the arena is proud to share historic milestones, record-breaking performances, and moments that have defined the venue’s legacy.
Over the past three decades, Van Andel Arena has hosted a variety of concerts, sporting events, family and comedy shows, and community gatherings, welcoming fans from Michigan and around the nation. Today, the arena looks back on a remarkable history showcasing the unforgettable moments that have defined the venue’s legacy, including the highest grossing show by Morgan Wallen, events that have broken the arena’s attendance record including Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Green Day, and the heaviest stage production to date brought in by Kanye West in 2018. The arena has welcomed its most-played individual artist, Kenny Chesney, for an impressive 16 shows, while Garth Brooks holds the record for most tickets sold during a single engagement with six shows over four days in 2016.
“Thirty years ago, Van Andel Arena opened its doors with the goal of bringing big-time events to Grand Rapids while facilitating community connection,” said General Manager Richard MacKeigan. “We’ve seen sold-out concerts, championship teams, and moments that people still talk about years later. We’re grateful to the fans, artists, teams, and staff who made these milestones possible, and we’re excited for what's to come.”
In comedy, Matt Rife leads for most tickets sold for a comedy performance in 2025. REO Speedwagon stands as the most-played band with eight appearances, with an honorable mention going to Journey, who is approaching their eighth show this June. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is the most-played tour, with an extraordinary 44 performances.
“Van Andel Arena has been a cornerstone for both entertainment and economic growth in Grand Rapids and Kent County,” said Rick Winn, Chairman of the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority. “Beyond the events appealing to all genres, the arena supports jobs, attracts visitors, and strengthens the local business community. This 30-year milestone is a chance to recognize the many individuals who keep the arena running event after event. From concessions teams and security personnel to custodial crews and countless event staff members, their hard work over the years has helped make Van Andel Arena a place where great experiences happen.”
The arena has also been home to many sports teams over its lifetime. The Grand Rapids Griffins have been playing at the arena since its opening in 1996, winning the Calder Cup in 2013 and 2017. Van Andel Arena served as home to the Arena Football League's Grand Rapids Rampage from 1998 to 2008, including hosting their 2001 ArenaBowl XV Championship win. The Grand Rapids Gold have been in the arena since 2022; prior to the Gold, the Grand Rapids Hoops played from the arena’s opening through the early 2000s. The Grand Rapids Rise arrived at the arena in 2024 and have been playing since.
As part of this anniversary celebration, Van Andel Arena has held community giveaways where 30 fans won tickets to Grand Rapids Rise, Grand Rapids Griffins and Grand Rapids Gold games, respectively. The arena is also celebrating by adding anniversary signage, including a mural in the lobby highlighting artists that have visited the venue over the past 30 years. Additionally, the venue is implementing a social media campaign throughout the year featuring giveaways, historical highlights, and community initiatives.
